The Enormity of Commonly Misused Words, Part 2

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and if you’ve been listening to this show for a while, you know how much I love the word “enormity.” Quick recap: Most people think this word just means huge,” but actually it means “huge evil.” Recently, I’ve actually seen a lot of news headlines using this word correctly, but there’s always more work to be done. So here are some of my favorite headlines that got things very, very wrong:

ENORMITY of opportunity for growth of women’s golf

Animation showing the ENORMITY of the universe

The enormity of Mallorca’s tourism growth

The enormity of God's grace

And my personal favorite, a real headline from a real newspaper: “THE ENORMITY OF IT ALL IS MASSIVE.”

Hm. Definitionally, I can’t really argue, but I want to.
