Why Good Typing Makes Good Grammar

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we’re saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I’m Lauren Smyth, and today, we’re talking about typing. Which … seems like it has nothing to do with grammar, except that it absolutely does, because typing is how you put grammar onto a page.
We excuse a lot of grammar errors as typos. “Whoops, I forgot that apostrophe!” turns into a habit of always forgetting the apostrophe. Pretty soon, whether you’re typing with 100% accuracy or not, you catch yourself making the same mistakes over and over. The solution to this problem is to type things correctly, the first time. Get yourself into the habit—starting now.
This doesn’t mean you need to be able to type at lightspeed. What it means is that when you’re typing, you should self-edit as you go. You should type as slowly as you need to for your thoughts to keep up with your fingers. And you should practice. There are free tools online where you can hone your typing skills and speed by reading good literature.
We’ll get to that bit about good literature in the next episode. But for now, that’s your Grammar Minute! Visit thegrammarminute.com for more tips and tricks.
